HAUNTED PLACES / KENTUCKY

BOBBY MACKEY'S,
WILDER.

Bobby Mackey's Music World is a country music club in Wilder, Kentucky, promoted since the early 1990s as the most haunted nightclub in America. The documented history, the stories told about it, and what stands there in 2026.

The history

Wilder is a small city in Campbell County, Kentucky, on the Licking River south of Newport. Local histories place a slaughterhouse and meatpacking plant at the club's address, 44 Licking Pike, from about 1850; the Cincinnati Enquirer dated the building that stood until 2024 to the 1930s.

The roadhouse that followed went through a string of names. The Northern Kentucky Tribune's history series lists the Primrose in the 1930s, the Latin Quarter when a Cleveland crime syndicate ran gambling there into the 1960s, and finally the Hard Rock Cafe, which police closed in 1977 after fatal shootings.

Robert Randall "Bobby" Mackey, a country singer born in 1948 in Concord, Kentucky, bought the building in 1978 and opened Bobby Mackey's Music World that September. He sang there with his own band on Friday and Saturday nights for more than 45 years. He was inducted into the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame in October 2024.

The haunted reputation came later. Carl Lawson, caretaker from 1978, lived in the apartment upstairs and described footsteps and a sense of being watched. A tabloid news program carried his story in 1991. In the 1990s a patron sued Mackey over a figure he said attacked him in the men's room; the case was dismissed, and a sign went up at the door saying the place was purported to be haunted and management was not responsible for the actions of any ghosts.

The old building closed in March 2024; repair of its roof, plumbing and furnaces would have cost more than rebuilding. The club moved into a former biker bar on US 42 in Florence, and the Wilder building was demolished on December 10, 2024. On June 22, 2026, Wilder's planning and zoning commission approved an 8,400-square-foot single-story replacement on about the same spot, expected to open roughly a year later, with the basement well kept under glass.

What people report

The stories center on the basement, and on the well there. Guides describe a stone shaft the slaughterhouse used as a drain and say the legend runs through it: that in the 1890s a group used the abandoned plant for rituals, and that Pearl Bryan's head was dropped into the well. Guides and visitors report being touched or scratched in the basement rooms, small stones thrown, and growling.

Upstairs, in the old dressing rooms and the caretaker's apartment, the story is Johanna's: a dancer, said to be the owner's daughter, who poisoned herself after her father had her lover, a singer called Robert Randall, killed. Visitors describe rose perfume and a figure in mirrors. No record of a Johanna has been found, and a Cincinnati station pointed out that Robert Randall are Bobby Mackey's own given names. Visitors leave small gifts in Carl Lawson's apartment; he died in 2012.

Pearl Bryan is a real case, and it should be told straight. She was 22, from Greencastle, Indiana, and pregnant; her body was found on February 1, 1896 on a farm at Fort Thomas, about two and a half miles from the club, and her head was never recovered. Two Cincinnati dental students, Scott Jackson and Alonzo Walling, were convicted and hanged in Newport on March 20, 1897. The Campbell County Historical and Genealogical Society calls the link to the club highly unlikely, and searches of property records, newspapers and court files have found none.

Accounts of hauntings here are folklore and entertainment, not verified events.

On television

Bobby Mackey's Music World was the subject of the first episode of Ghost Adventures, broadcast on Travel Channel on October 17, 2008, and the crew came back for "Return to Bobby Mackey's" on October 1, 2010. Ghost Hunters filmed there for an episode shown on Syfy on November 16, 2011. BuzzFeed Unsolved: Supernatural opened its second season at the club on April 7, 2017, and Paranormal Lockdown spent three days there for an episode shown on Destination America on December 11, 2018.

The BuzzFeed episode is on the show's own channel: Watch the BuzzFeed Unsolved visit on the BuzzFeed Unsolved Network channel.

Visiting and running your own session

In October 2026 there is nothing to visit at 44 Licking Pike but a cleared lot and, if the schedule holds, a building site. The club is open at its temporary home on US 42 in Florence on Friday and Saturday nights from 7 p.m. Check the club's own site before you go; every date has been called subject to change.

Gatekeeper Paranormal ran two-hour ghost tours and five-hour investigations in the old building until mid-2024, and overnight events were held there occasionally. The owner's plan is for the well to return to the new building under glass and for tours to resume there. Whether anything runs at the Florence site, and the rules on phones and recording, are questions for the operator.

When the new building opens, keep two things in mind. It is a working music club first, and Bobby Mackey has said for decades that for him it was always about the music. And a young woman died in this county in 1896 and lies in a cemetery in Greencastle, Indiana; tell her story with care. For a session, pick a quiet corner during a tour rather than the dance floor, away from the stage speakers, the bar coolers and the crowd, and set the phone down on something solid while it learns the room.

Spooky Box runs a spirit box session on an Android phone: its sensors decide the moment a word arrives, chance decides which word, and every word shows its reason. Record the session as audio or video and replay it from any word. Bring it to a tour night when the new building opens.

Questions

Is Bobby Mackey's Music World really haunted?

Nobody can say that it is. The ghost accounts at Bobby Mackey's are stories told by a former caretaker, by tour guides and by visitors over some 35 years. Searches of property records, newspapers and court files have found nothing to support them, and the county historical society calls the Pearl Bryan link highly unlikely. Read them as folklore, not as fact.

Is Bobby Mackey's Music World open in 2026?

Yes, but not in Wilder. The original building closed in March 2024 and was demolished that December. The club runs from a temporary home on US 42 in Florence, Kentucky, on Friday and Saturday nights while a new single-story building goes up on the Wilder site; plans were approved in June 2026, with opening expected about a year later.

Can you take a ghost tour or stay overnight at Bobby Mackey's?

Not at the moment. Gatekeeper Paranormal ran two-hour tours and five-hour investigations in the old building until mid-2024. The owner has said the basement well will be kept in the new building under glass and that tours will return when it opens. Until then, ask the operator what, if anything, is offered at the Florence location.

Spooky Box is paranormal entertainment. It uses device sensor activity and a word engine to create atmospheric sessions. Generated words and sensor readings do not establish the presence of spirits or verified communication.
