SPOOKY BOX / APPS LIKE NECROPHONIC

A NECROPHONIC ALTERNATIVE
FOR ANDROID.

Spooky Box is a spirit box-style app for Android that takes a different route from Necrophonic: instead of sound banks you listen through, it reads your phone's sensors and speaks a random word, with the reason it came up shown underneath. It has no ads, no account and no subscription; sessions, recording and filming cost nothing, and one optional one-time unlock adds the extras.

What Necrophonic is

Necrophonic is a paid app from ChillSeekers on Google Play. An App Store listing with the same name and description covers iPhone and iPad, so it is on both platforms. Its Google Play listing describes it as an ITC app and puts the emphasis on sound: eight sound banks, mastered to bring out high, mid and low frequencies, that play together in layers.

The listing is specific about what is in those banks. The audio is made up of phonemes, partial words, reversed audio, foreign languages and other parts of speech, and apart from basic phonetic sounds such as "na", "no", "da" and "ma", it says there are no real words or phrases in them. An optional ninth bank plays white noise taken from the internal sounds of the DR60 recorder, and Echo and Reverb effects can be laid over the mix. You listen to the stream, and what you hear in it is yours to judge.

How Spooky Box makes a word instead

Spooky Box has no sound banks and no radio in it. For the first five seconds of a session it learns the room: the normal level of each sensor your phone has, among magnetic field, motion, pressure, temperature and humidity. After that, words arrive at unpredictable moments, and a bigger shift away from those normal readings makes the next word likely to come sooner.

The word itself is drawn at random from a built-in bank of more than 3,500 words, spoken aloud by the phone's voice, and built-in words do not repeat within a session. Under every word the screen shows the reason it came up: "Magnetic shift +14.2 µT", "Pressure shift", or "Spontaneous" when no reading stood out and the word arrived by chance alone. The log keeps each word with its time and its reason.

Readings taken while the phone is being handled are thrown out, and hands-off mode pauses words until the phone is still again, so picking it up does not set it off. The guide to how a spirit box app chooses a word has the full account.

The two apps therefore ask different things of you. Necrophonic gives you a dense stream of fragments to listen through; Spooky Box gives you a whole word, a time and a stated reason, and leaves the meaning to you.

Recording, replay and video

When you tap Start session in Spooky Box, you choose whether to record it: Nothing, Audio, or Audio and video. With Audio, the microphone keeps the whole session on your phone; afterwards, tap any word in the log to hear the room from just before it came up, and tap Mark during a session to stamp a moment worth going back to.

Choose Audio and video and the session is filmed in the camera view, with sound, for up to 20 minutes, with the current word, its reason, the clock and the magnetic reading drawn into the picture. In a session you are not filming, the camera takes photos and clips with the same overlay. All of this costs nothing; exporting the audio or a video of a session is part of the unlock. Necrophonic's listing does not mention recording.

Price, ads and accounts, side by side

Necrophonic is paid up front: you buy the app once on Google Play, and its listing shows no "Contains ads" or "In-app purchases" label. Whether an account is needed is not stated on its listing. Spooky Box starts at no cost, and its one optional purchase is also made once, through Google Play, with no subscription behind it.

The Spooky Box unlock adds five things: every archived session opens, not just the five most recent; custom words and names, typed or imported from a text file; a setting for how often custom words appear; the Dead Channel and Wraith voice effects; and export of the audio or video of a session. Words and voice come in English, Spanish and Portuguese, and the full list is on the home page.

Which one fits you

Necrophonic fits people who want the classic listening experience: a layered stream of mastered sound fragments and effects, bought once, on Android or on an iPhone or iPad, with the listener deciding what the stream said.

Spooky Box fits people who want a word they can hear plainly, a reason for it on the screen, and a record of the night: a log with times, a recording to replay from any word, and a film with the words drawn in. It runs on Android 8.0 or later; there is no iPhone version yet. It costs nothing to start, so you can set it on a steady shelf in a place like Waverly Hills Sanatorium without paying first; the ghost hunting guide covers how to run a session on an investigation.

One thing both should be judged by: no phone app can confirm a presence. In Spooky Box the word is random, the sensors decide only when it arrives, and every reading is an ordinary measurement of the room. It is made for entertainment, in the spirit box tradition, and no word or reading shows anything more than that.

Try it

Spooky Box is on Google Play for Android 8.0 or later. Start a session, set the phone down and listen; recording and filming are included from the first session. If you later want custom words, the voice effects or an export, the unlock is there once, when you want it.

Questions

Is Spooky Box like Necrophonic?

They sit in the same tradition but work differently. Necrophonic's listing describes mastered sound banks of phonetic fragments and effects that you listen through. Spooky Box has no sound banks and no radio: it reads your phone's sensors, speaks a whole word drawn at random from its built-in bank, and shows the reason the word came up.

Does Necrophonic have ads or a subscription?

Its Google Play listing shows a single purchase for the app and no Contains ads or In-app purchases label, so it is paid up front rather than by subscription. Whether an account is needed is not stated on its listing. Spooky Box costs nothing to start, has no ads, no account and no subscription, and one optional one-time unlock adds the extras.

Do apps like Necrophonic and Spooky Box really work?

No phone app can confirm a presence, and neither app can show more than what a phone has: sensors, a microphone, a speaker and a camera. In Spooky Box the word is random, the sensors decide only when it arrives, and every reading is an ordinary measurement of the room. Spooky Box is made for entertainment and says so; what you hear in Necrophonic's sound banks is yours to judge.

Spooky Box is paranormal entertainment. It uses device sensor activity and a word engine to create atmospheric sessions. Generated words and sensor readings do not establish the presence of spirits or verified communication.
