SPOOKY BOX / SPIRIT BOX APPS COMPARED

SPIRIT BOX APPS,
SIDE BY SIDE.

Want a spirit box app for Android with no ads, no account and no subscription? Spooky Box is built that way: sessions cost nothing and the one optional unlock is paid once. Below, four well-known apps sit beside it on the same points, from their own store listings.

How this comparison was made

Every fact about another app here comes from its store listing, opened on 11 October 2026: its Google Play page where it has one, its App Store page where it does not. Google Play marks a listing with two labels, Contains ads and In-app purchases; the table reports those. Where a listing says nothing about a point, the table says so.

Necrophonic, by ChillSeekers, is paid up front on Google Play. Its listing describes eight sound banks of phonemes, partial words and reversed audio, with echo and reverb effects, and says the banks hold no real words or phrases. It carries neither label.

GhostTube's main app is listed on Google Play as GhostTube Paranormal Videos. It installs free, carries both labels, and its description says it offers in-app purchases and subscriptions. It reads the phone's magnetometer and picks words from a dictionary it says spans over 20 languages. A sibling app, GhostTube VOX Synthesizer, sweeps radio streams; its listing says some features may require creating an account.

Sono X10 Spirit Box, by Janus Pedersen, is listed on the App Store for iPhone and iPad; we did not find it on Google Play when we looked. Its listing describes a voice bank of English phonemes and cuts of speech, with no full words, played when the phone's sensors are triggered; the standard app is listed as Free and a Pro version is sold separately.

Ghost Hunting Tools, by Weasel, installs free from Google Play and carries both labels. Its description bundles a word box, a recorder, a word databank, an EMF meter and graphs into one app, and says it is designed for entertainment purposes only.

Where Spooky Box sits

Spooky Box has no ads, no account and no subscription, and goes online only to check the unlock purchase. And it does a thing none of the four listings mention: it shows the reason under every word. Your phone's sensors (magnetic field, motion, pressure, temperature and humidity, where present) decide when a word arrives; the first five seconds learn the room, and a bigger shift brings the next word sooner.

The word itself is random, from a built-in bank of more than 3,500 words, and the screen says why it came up: Magnetic shift +14.2 µT, Pressure shift, or Spontaneous when nothing stood out. Readings taken while the phone is handled are thrown out.

Record a session as Nothing, Audio, or Audio and video (up to 20 minutes of filming), then tap any word in the log to hear the room from just before it. Words and voice come in English, Spanish and Portuguese, and every session is kept in an archive on your phone. One optional one-time purchase through Google Play adds:

It is one payment, not a subscription; the full list is on the home page.

Do any of these apps work?

Plainly: in Spooky Box the word is random, the sensors decide only its timing, and no word or reading shows anything more than that something in the room changed. It is made for entertainment, in the spirit box tradition, and it has no radio in it. The other listings say similar things: GhostTube's that its tools measure and react to changes in the environment only, Ghost Hunting Tools' that it is for entertainment only. Judge any of them by what they let you see.

Choosing one

If no ads matter most, check for the Contains ads label under the app's name on Google Play. If no subscription matters most, read the In-app purchases line and the description. If no account matters most, look for sign-in wording. If you want to know why a word arrived, pick an app that tells you.

Our spirit box app guide explains how Spooky Box chooses a word, the ghost hunting guide covers what a phone's sensors can measure, and the haunted places pages, such as Waverly Hills Sanatorium, show where people take them.

Try it

Spooky Box is on Google Play for Android 8.0 or later. Set the phone down and run a session; there is nothing to sign up for, and nothing to pay unless you later want the unlock. An iPhone version is coming next.

Questions

Which spirit box app for Android has no ads?

Spooky Box has no ads, no account and no subscription; sessions cost nothing and the one optional unlock is paid once. On Google Play, the Contains ads label under an app's name is the quickest check: of the apps compared here, GhostTube and Ghost Hunting Tools carry it, and Necrophonic, a paid app, does not.

Is there a free spirit box app with no subscription?

Yes. Spooky Box installs free with unlimited sessions, recording and filming, and has no subscription; the only purchase is one optional unlock, paid once through Google Play. By their listings, GhostTube offers in-app purchases and subscriptions, Ghost Hunting Tools shows in-app purchases, Sono X10 is free with a Pro version sold separately, and Necrophonic is paid up front.

Do spirit box apps need an account?

Spooky Box does not: there is nothing to sign up for, and it goes online only to check the unlock purchase. None of the other four listings states that an account is required; GhostTube's VOX Synthesizer listing says some features may require creating an account.

Spooky Box is paranormal entertainment. It uses device sensor activity and a word engine to create atmospheric sessions. Generated words and sensor readings do not establish the presence of spirits or verified communication.
